Safe Space Training: Student Panel

Oct 24

Posted by: Casey Constant

ODU Student Affairs is holding its upcoming Safe Space Training* on November 7 this year and, as usual, is including a student panel in the training process, to begin around 11am. We need a group of people willing to discuss their experiences being GLBTQ on campus, as well as to make any suggestions for how to improve those experiences if they have any. It is an excellent opportunity to voice any concerns you may have.

If you wish to participate in the panel, please be prepared to answer questions the trainees may have about your sexual orientation and/or gender identity and how they have shaped your experiences. I was on the panel for the last Safe Space Training and from my experience, the questions will be asked as respectfully as possible; the trainees are more likely to hesitate about asking a personal question rather than risk being rude to the student guests. Their goal is to understand.

If you would like to participate in the panel, please contact me in some way ASAP with contact information so I can inform Student Affairs.

*The Safe Space program is a system for training GLBTQ-friendly faculty and staff to act as safe havens for students to turn to if the need arrives. Students can know that these faculty and staff will not judge them for being GLBTQ (or an ally) and are trained in the kinds of issues GLBTQ students and their allies face.
